Now that the Thanksgiving meals have been digested, it’s time to turn our sights to the holiday season proper, and what better way to kick that off than with free music to stream or download? All it takes is a library card and a Hoopla account. Then, you have access to thousands of full-length music albums (not to mention eBooks, Audiobooks, Comics, Movies, and Television programs). Trust us, there is a LOT of music. Therefore, this will be a recurring post starting today and running through December in which we share some of the bounty Hoopla has to offer.
Grab your egg nog! Here we go!
Sia, Everyday is Christmas. Whereas most artists put together albums of holiday covers, Sia delivers a holiday album containing all original songs. We’d expect nothing less from the ever-singular songstress.
Cheap Trick, Christmas Christmas. 40+ years in and Cheap Trick still rocks. This album, which mixes traditionals with classics, is no exception. A welcome shot in the arm for those who like to turn it up to eleven.
Nat King Cole, The Christmas Song. You hear the strings and wait for that golden voice… “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…” and then it feels like the holiday season. It’s just not December without Nat King Cole’s classic take on these tried and true songs.
Vince Guaraldi Trio, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Go ahead, dance like the characters in the tv specials. We will too.
Off the Beaten Path:
The Flaming Lips, “Christmas at the Zoo”. This jam is the lone holiday song on the album. It opens “There wasn’t any snow on Christmas Eve/So I knew what I should do/I thought I’d free the animals/all locked up at the zoo” and we are off on yet another adventure with this beloved band of Fearless Freaks.
Various Artists, Disney’s Family Christmas Collection. This is a pretty big stocking full of songs from Mickey and friends.
That’s all for now, but be sure to check in to the Club Ink Blog all December for future posts. And, if you are on Twitter, follow us, and check our daily Hoopla Holiday music recommendations by searching the hashtag #GCPLHolidayPlaylist. We will be sharing music daily until Christmas!
