Book review on Chasing Lincoln’s Killer
By James Swanson
This YA book is extremely popular with students, so I wanted to check it out for myself. It is a shorter version of the author’s bestselling adult book Manhunt, published in 2006. Despite the shorter sentences and fewer chapters, the book maintains the vibrant details of a fast-paced historical thriller. The 12 day search for John Wilkes Booth is described almost as an hour-by-hour account, with layers of characters and rich historical facts. The author has included excellent black and white illustrations of original documents and newspaper articles. Though most of us are familiar with the captivating events of this wild 12-day chase, the author keeps it fresh and exciting from beginning to end. This is a great read for children in grades 5 – 8, and a worthwhile quick read for adults as well. I enjoyed the book immensely.
