Lou Reed: A Life by Anthony DeCurtis
An unflinching look at the life of the great Lou Reed. From his early years as a songwriter for hire for Pickwick Records to the founding of Velvet Underground to his prolific and uncompromising solo career, DeCurtis paints an honest portrait of Lou Reed the brilliant artist, as well as Lou Reed the person, for better or worse. An engrossing read for die-hard fans and newcomers alike.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
When Conor, 12, is confronted by an ancient monster outside his bedroom window several nights in a row, his initial reaction is to run away. But, this monster won’t leave. Conor’s life isn’t the best by outward appearances. His mother is terribly ill. His grandmother is marginally tolerable – on a good day. He’s bullied at school. So, when this monster shows up and strikes a bargain with Conor, the boy decides it would be better to comply with the monster’s request and then get on with his own life. The monster tells Conor three different stories, but stipulates that Conor will have to tell him the fourth in order to live. This is one of the best books I read in 2017.

The Story So Far’s The Story So Far
The Story So Far is one of my favorite bands and this album (along with their other two albums) is phenomenal. I was able to see them perform at the Warped Tour last year and they are just as good live as they are recorded. Top tracks on this album include “Heavy Gloom” and “Smile.” Be warned though, these songs are not the happiest you’ll hear.
