My Escape from North Korea: A Thousand Miles to Freedom by Eunsun Kim

I would recommend this book because it’s a real eye opener as to how much we take for granted in America and what actually goes on in other countries. It took 11 years of hard labor, bitter cold, starvation, human cruelty and degradation to finally arrive and become citizens of South Korea. This book shows the resilience of the human spirit and what determination can do. (Non-fiction)

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

This book is a story about race in America today. The perspective of two very different characters drew me in and forced me to look at the world in a new way. I couldn’t put this book down and when it was over, I couldn’t escape the truths it exposed. Excellent read! (Adult fiction)

The Blue Castle by L.M Montgomery

The Blue Castle is one of Montgomery’s least know novels, but in my opinion, it’s one of her best! This book is very well written and had a fantastic ending. Wishing for more, because it was so good; yet, it is so complete, how there could be more to tell? (Adult fiction)

Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple

Two thumbs up for actress Margaret Rutherford’s portrayal of Agatha Christie’s famous woman detective, Miss Jane Marple! There are four black & white movies in this set, 3 of which are based on Ms. Christie’s well known mysteries. This is classic British humor at its best! (DVD set)

City of Thieves by David Benioff

Two young men are given a mission during WWII in Leningrad, Russia, when resources and shelter are scarce. This book contained plot twisting, vivid scenes, and you go along for a horrible, risky adventure that is both beautiful and ugly. You will love and hate the ending, and wish the author had written more. Excellent! (adult fiction)

When Calls the Heart

My latest guilty pleasure is the TV series called When Calls the Heart. It runs on the Hallmark channel, but the library has it available for check out. It is about a high society young woman’s trials and tribulations when she travels to the frontier to teach school. The show is based on Janette Oke’s books about the Canadian West. I love it! It is such a nice wholesome show – it reminds me of Little House on the Prairie!! (DVD series)

The Girl with No Name: The Incredible Story of a Child Raised by Monkeys by Marina Chapman

My curiosity got the best of me when I put my hands on this title! We’ve all heard about the boy raised by wolves, but never had I heard of a girl raised by monkeys! This is a true story of a young girl abducted from her village in South America and abandoned in the jungle. It is a real life adventure showing how one girl overcomes danger, loneliness, and oppression. (non-fiction)

A spoof of the Japanese monster film, this unique picture book includes lots of puns and laugh-out-loud humor for both adults and kids alike. Look for Kat Kong by the same author for even more fun! (picture book)

Hacksaw Ridge

After hearing many positive comments from patrons & co-workers, I had to see for this for myself. It is a true story about an American soldier in World War II that rescued 75 men from the front lines. Due to his religious beliefs, he did not fire or carry a gun. He believed the war was justified, but killing was wrong. The movie received numerous awards and nominations, and I recommend it. (DVD)
