Past 50 and… How did I end up here?

Benched. Sidelined. Maybe unemployed. Possibly in financial trouble. So much to offer, but no one seems to want it. People used to come to me for answers – now no one seems to care.

We get here by various routes: laid off in that corporate merger, now can’t find a decent job; retired early, now bored to death; quit because I couldn’t tolerate that lousy boss anymore; hit by that health crisis I didn’t see coming; went home to take care of my sick loved one.

How we got here isn’t as important as how we find our way out – find the reset button on our careers and our lives.

Is there a way to start again this late in life? Yes, yes, yes, and yes – absolutely! And, it doesn’t matter how old we are 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and older. It doesn’t matter because whatever our age, condition, or circumstances there is something we have that the world needs and wants. It’s just a matter of connecting the dots then giving it everything we have – with the help of others.

Why do we need others?

Because our biggest obstacle is that dangerous neighborhood between our left ear and our right ear. You know, the place where the voices say we’re no good anymore – maybe never were. That maybe we got ahead by faking it – fooling everyone. That we’re too old to learn new things. That the best we can do is struggle it through to the end hoping for some sweet crumbs along the way.

It’s nonsense. Isolation is the dream-killer and we cannot afford to let it determine our futures.

Again, the world needs what we have to offer so let’s get about it because time is shorter than it used to be.
